The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Beautiful and Damned is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s second book, after The Great Gatsby.

Like his last book, this one is set in the 1920s, this time in New York City. We follow Anthony and Gloria Patch, who are heirs to a very large fortune.

At first, they go crazy with their money, drinking all the time, dancing, buying luxury items and toys.

Over time the stockpile starts to dwindle down and their pursuit of wealth starts to strain their marriage as they deal with the corruption of high society.

Why does Taylor Swift recommend the book The Beautiful and Damned?

Taylor Swift has this to say about The Beautiful and Damned, “It’s something F. Scott Fitzgerald did so well, to describe a scene so gorgeously interwoven with rich emotional revelations, that you yourself have escaped from your own life for a moment.”

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars was published in 2014, and also became a big movie after the major success of the book. John Green has written other popular books like The Anthropocene Reviewed and Turtles All the Way Down.

The title of the book comes from the Shakespeare play Julius Cesear, when Cassius says to Brutus “Men at some time were masters of their fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.”

The Fault in Our Stars follows Hazel, a young girl with a life-threatening tumor. She has had miracle surgery that allowed her to get a few more years of life on Earth.

At this point, she meets a boy, Augustus Waters, at a Cancer Kid Support Group, and falls in love with him. The book explores their relationship, while they deal with the sad realities of cancer.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Jane Eyre was published in 1847 by Charlotte Brontë under the pen name Currer Bell. It is considered a classic in English literature and one of the best romance novels of all time.

Jane Eyre is about a woman’s quest for freedom. Jane Eyre doesn’t have a great childhood, growing up as an orphan in her vile aunt’s house, as well as attending a horrible charity school.

Eventually, she becomes independent and learns from her childhood to become a governess at Thornfield Hall. During this time, she falls in love with a man named Rochester, who happens to be her employer. She discovers many secrets about the man that makes her question a very important choice: will she follow him despite her concerns, or will she leave him even though she loves him?

If you are interested in Jane Eyre, keep in mind that the book was written in the 1800s, and reflects the language used in that time period. It is a difficult book to get through, but it is very rewarding.

This book is also in the public domain, which means if you don’t mind not having the physical copy you can read it online. You can also listen to the audiobook for free. My favorite is Storytime with Stephanie on Spotify.

Why does Taylor Swift recommend the book Jane Eyre?

While Taylor Swift has never actually directly recommended Jane Eyre, if you listen to her music you can see that she is a big fan of the book!

On her album, Folklore, she references Jane Eyre on the song, Invisible String. Here is the reference from the song:

“Isn’t it just so pretty to think, all along there was some invisible string tying you to me.”

This references the part in Jane Eyre where Rochester is begging Jane to stay with him, saying, “I have a strange feeling with regard to you: as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I’m afraid that cord of communion would snap. And then I’ve a notion that I’d take to bleeding inwardly. As for you—you’d forget me.”

Needless to say, it appears Taylor is a fan of Jane Eyre, which makes sense. She has very romantic songs, and this is a very romantic book.

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Eat Pray Love is about the author, Elizabeth Gilbert, having everything she could possibly want, yet still feeling unfulfilled.

Her story is about how she changed her viewpoint on success, and went out to explore the world. In her book, she visits three aspects with different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and balance on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Eat in Italy, Pray in India, and Love in Bali.

Eat Pray Love aims to inspire and empower readers to search for their own best selves and successes.

Why does Taylor Swift recommend the book Eat Pray Love?

Taylor Swift recommends the book Eat Pray Love because it was one of her picks for the “You are What You Read” contest.

She’s also talked a lot with kids about the book and thinks it’s a powerful romantic healing tool.

She also had this to say about Elizabeth Gilbert, after she came out with her most recent book, “Listening to her talk at seminars, especially one that I YouTubed, where she was talking about trying to create her followup project, it made me cry. It was so inspirational.”

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Rebecca was written by Daphne du Maurier, published in 2006, and is 416 pages long.

When Taylor Swift recommended the book in an interview, she said, “When I was reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and I was thinking, ‘Wow, her husband just tolerates her. She’s doing all these things and she is trying so hard. She’s tried to impress him and he’s just tolerating her the whole time.’ There was a part of me that was relating to that because at some point in my life I felt that way, and so I ended up writing the song ‘Tolerate,’ which is all about trying to love someone who is ambivalent.”

Rebecca starts off with the words ‘Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…’ and then we are transported to a huge mansion built of gray stone along the Cornish coast.

The book follows an orphan girl who meets Mrs. Maxim de Winter, a widow, while she is on a trip to the south of France. Mrs. de Winter takes us on a journey of flashbacks to her young self as a very surprised bride to a husband that she hardly knows.

There is one secret, however, being kept alive by the sinister housekeep, Mrs. Danvers. That is the secret of Mrs. de Winter’s late husband’s first wife, the stunningly beautiful Rebecca.

Fun fact: Rebecca became a hit Netflix film, so if you liked the book be sure to watch the movie too!

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Stargirl is a book written by Jerry Spinelli. He published the book in 2000. It’s quite a short read at about 169 pages.

Taylor Swift said, “Some people call Stargirl weird, but no matter how much they make fun of her, she continues to be herself.” Taylor Swift just loved how the main character’s individualism started to rub off on those around her, and made them want to be themselves instead of conforming to those around them.

The story is told from the point of view of Leo, a student at Mica High. One day a new girl, Stargirl Caraway, arrives as a new student at school. She’s always been homeschooled, and this is her first time at a public school.

The first thing he notices is her odd behavior, like how she comes to school in weird outfits, or how she brings a ukulele with her everywhere, or her pet rat named Cinnamon. She loves to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to people. No one knows what to think about Stargirl.

Sadly, they deem her weird, and shun her, excluding her from everything because of how different she is. Leo doesn’t like this, so he tries to help her be ‘normal’. However, this isn’t what Stargirl wants, and continues to be her natural, authentic self.

Fun fact: Stargirl became a movie on Disney+!
